Dancing traffic lights

A dancing traffic that dances in order to change people’s behaviour when crossing the road. The dancing draws attention to the fact that it is not safe to cross and encourages the pedestrian to watch the dancer rather than take a risk. The dancer is interactive as it is a real time projection of people dancing in a booth nearby.

#ThinkDo:

  • How does this impact on physical and mental well being?
  • How does this reduce pedestrian risk taking?
  • What barriers might there be to using this technology more widely?
  • How could you use this technology to inspire your next project?

Intelligent zebra crossing

Rennicks UK have created an intelligent zebra crossing with detectors that activate flashing LED road studs when the crossing is in use. The system claims to raise a driver’s awareness of pedestrians in particularly busy areas such as retail parks and tests have shown they have a positive change in driver behaviour. The lights are designed not to flash all the time as drivers get used to this and the flashing lights catch their attention more easily. The studs are seen as a practical, low cost and sustainable way of increasing road safety.

#ThinkDo:

  • How does the crossing impact on pedestrian and driver safety?
  • Explain why the crossing is considered low cost and sustainable
  • Investigate the sensing switches used in our everyday lives. Take photos of all the ones you find.
  • Evaluate the benefits of using sensors in products and systems?
  • How could you use this technology to inspire your next project?

Musical stairs

Stairs in a subway that are made into a piano to encourage people to have fun using the stairs rather than taking the easy route on the escalator.

#ThinkDo:

  • How does this impact on physical and mental well being?
  • This technology uses physical switches that activate when stood on. What other examples of products and systems use this technology?
  • How could you use this technology to inspire your next project?
