This resource supports the development of skills & knowledge of textiles practical techniques at KS3, 4 & 5 students. It includes:

  • 22 ‘How to’ PowerPoints consisting of photos & a brief written instruction on how to do a range of techniques (open seam, closed seam, French seam, run & fell seam, mock run & fell seam, piped seam, 2 types of topstitched hem, 2 types of binding, blind hem (machined), facing, poppers, hook & eye, centred zip, lapped zip, concealed zip, single point dart, knife pleats, box pleats, inverted pleats, reverse appliqué, zigzag appliqué 
  • A4 instruction sheet for selected techniques (open seam, closed seam, French seam, run & fell seam, mock run & fell seam, piped seam, 2 types of topstitched hem, 2 types of binding, blind hem (machined), facing). Sheet includes written instructions, technical drawings & photos
  • 50 jpeg photos of a range of textiles products. These can be used in resources teachers produce or printed as individual resource cards. Suggested uses for the photos are also included.
  • Keyword PowerPoint resource with images & names of techniques ideal for supporting literacy
  • PowerPoint and hand out on quality control points when making a product
  • PowerPoint and hand out on industrial practice and machinery used when making a product
  • Revision summary sheet on a way of remembering construction & decorative techniques
  • Revision worksheet on textiles skills
  • Worksheet on seams & edge finishes to help students understand the difference as these techniques are often confused
  • A progression table categorising skills into basic, intermediate & higher level skills
  • A ‘How to make’ sheet outlining the order of manufacturing of a range of popular products
  • A flow chart worksheet for students to practice the order of manufacturing products
  • 2 worksheets to help students analyse & evaluate techniques
