Standard LEDs  From 18p

IMG 9488 copy

These LEDs are suitable for use in textiles items and do not need resistors. They are slightly harder to use than PCB LEDs as they have wire legs you have to twist which can be fiddly and it can be easy to confuse the polarity of the legs. They advantage of using them is that they give a bead type effect on the fabric surface and slot well through eyelets and buttonholes.

There are a variety of different types of standard LEDs:

Yellow, blue, red or green flashing
Pink or white continuous illumination
Colour changing LEDs which gradually change from red, green to blue

PCB LEDs   70p

5G2A1099 copy 25G2A1091 copy

These are easier to use than the standard LEDs as they have no legs and have ready made connections to which the conductive thread can be connected. They are much flatter than the standard LEDs so don’t sit as raised on the fabric surface. They have big holes and are easy to stitch onto fabric with conductive thread. These are also clearly marked with '+' and '-' to indicate which is the positive and which is the negative connection.   (L 15, W 6.5, H 2.7 mm)

Available in red, blue, white, green, lilac

Coin Cell Holders (battery holders/power boards)

A coin cell holder holds the coin cell (battery). It has large connection points making it easy for it to be sewn onto fabric using conductive thread. It is also clearly marked to show the battery polarity.  There are different 3 types of coin cell holder; a basic one without a switch, one with a small slider switch on the board, and one with both a slider switch and a light sensor.

Coin cell holder (without a switch)  £1.32

Separate switches can be added by adding a separate on/off slider switch, metal poppers or a metal zip (see handout for information on how to do this).

Switched coin cell holder  £2.22

IMG 7011 copy2711_large_electro_fashion_switch_coin_cell_holder

This is the same as the standard coin cell holder but it has a small slideable power switch so that you can turn the power on and off.  Note the slider switch is quite small and fiddly. It can be used underneath some materials as an invisible switch rather than needing open access.  It has large connections to which the conductive thread can easily be   connected. L 44,W 20, H5 mm

Coin cell holder with light sensor  £3

2721_large_electro_fashion_light_sensor

This cell holder has a light sensor on the board which means that when it gets dark it automatically turns the LED on. There is also an on / off switch so the LED can be switched off permanently.

Batteries for coin cell holders

5G2A1093 copy

There are now restrictions on sending batteries through the post. Batteries are only available to buy when bought as part of a project kit (e.g. the torch project kits) or when ordered via a school order with the accompanying cell holders.

You can easily buy the batteries needed for the cell holders on this page in supermarkets and many high street stores. The battery required is a CR2032 3V Lithium Battery (it looks like a watch / calculator battery). Battery life depends on the number of LEDs in use but a battery should last for at least 10 hours of continuous use with 1 LED and usually lasts for much longer (note this reduces the more LEDs that are used).

Batteries sold as part of a school order cost 42p each. Note that there may be limits to the number of batteries that can be sent in one package because of the rules and this might result in a increase in postage and packaging costs. If you have any queries about ordering batteries email julie@julieboyd.co.uk

Conductive Thread   from £2

5G2A1099 running stitch

Conductive thread can be used like ordinary sewing thread but it conducts electricity meaning that electronics can be integrated into textiles. It is slightly heavier than ordinary thread but can still be used on a domestic sewing machine (usually wound by hand onto the bobbin). It only comes in one colour so when designing your product you will need to think of ways of hiding it.

Available in 2 lengths: Approx. 2 metre card or approx. 10m on a spool (spool is not suitable for use in a machine)

Switches

L IMG 0968

You can add ‘on/off’ switches to your product by using metal poppers and zips (see here for instructions). You can also buy separate switches that have connections that are sewn into place using conductive thread. They have big holes that make them easy to stitch onto the fabric. The switches are usually integrated into the positive side of the circuit. There are several different types of switches you can buy; a tilt switch, a slider switch and a push switch

Tilt switch     £1.26

Activated when tilted. When horizontal the switch is off and when tilted 10° from horizontal the tilt switch is on.

Slide switch  £1.14

2709_large_electro_fashion_slide_switch

Switch slides sideways and turns the LEDs on or off. Note that the slider is very small and fiddly and may not be easy to locate under bulky fabrics.

See ‘How to Guides’ on using these components & project ideas

Push switch  90p

2708_large_electro_fashion_push_switch

This can be used to activate your project when it pressed. Note it only activates when pressed and has to be held down continuously for the LED to light up. Once you remove your finger from the switch it stops working.

Not sure what components to buy?

It depends on your project but, as a general guide, to create a basic circuit, you will need a cell holder, an LED and conductive thread to join them together. If you buy the cell holder with no switch on the board you will probably need to buy a separate switch otherwise you can’t turn the light off without taking the battery out.
