Stitching with Paper: Jennifer Collier

L IMG 5939

Jennifer Collier originally worked with textiles materials but now only uses different papers and boards in combination with textiles techniques. She makes a range of decorative and functional products from magazines, books and other papers and sees experimentation to find out what each type of paper will do to be the key to her work.

Below are some of her lampshade designs with each one being made from different papers and decorated in different ways.

#ThinkDo

  • Investigate Jennifer Collier's work further
  • Collect different types of paper and board and experiment with them to find out their properties and limitations when used as a textile material. Compare the properties of each of the materials used.
  • Use Jennifer Collier's work to inspire and create your own samples. Don’t forget to credit her in your work.

  • Investigate the work of Marna Lunt who produces hand appliquéd embroidered lampshades

Practical activities and ideas are provided as a starting point only. Students should use these as inspiration as part of an iterative design process developing the idea further themselves. Credit should be given to the original source where appropriate.
