E-textiles projects by Mary Sayers & Chris Clay

Mary Sayers and Chris Clay have produced some stunning Christmas decorations, as well as a range of other items, using e-textiles.

Mary originally bought some e-textiles components in 2013 when she was entering a Christmas stocking competition and wanted something to make her work stand out from the crowd.

Although Mary’s stocking didn’t win a prize it was a beautiful piece of work that got her interested in using e-textiles components again. So much so, in fact, that in 2015 Mary and Chris did a presentation to their computer machine embroidery club, MK GEMS, of how to use e-textiles in machine embroidered Christmas decorations.

Mary and Chris haven’t attended any e-textiles training and have just used the instructions on my website, as well as the ones that come with the components when they are purchased from me.

They found that felt was an easy fabric to use with the components and they particularly like cutwork and lace embroidery designs as the lights can shine through the holes.

The Christmas card designs Mary and Chris created proved the most difficult to do because it was hard to find a suitable switch, but the solution was a simple metal popper sewn to the ribbon bow.

I am delighted that Mary and Chris have been able to produce such excellent outcomes using e-textiles and that they have been able to share what they have learnt about e-textiles with their machine embroidery group.
