There has been no blog for the past couple of weeks as there just haven’t been enough hours in the day! We’ve been running lots of courses for the new D&T GCSE all over the country so this has kept us pretty busy. This is the final blog of the term so I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a great Christmas and New Year break. Don’t forget that when there isn’t time for me to do a blog there are still regular updates on my Facebook and Twitter pages. There are also lots of free resources on the website if you are looking for lesson support ideas and these are being added to all of the time.

Calendar    Things coming up soon include:

11th January - Textiles Technicians: Basic Maintenance & Servicing of Sewing Machines in Nottingham (includes bursary which pays the course fee)

14th January - GCSE D&T 2017: Textiles in the New Qualification in Nottingham

Curriculum Updates

The New GCSE & A Level D&T Qualifications

At the time of writing AQA’s GCSE specification has still not been accepted by Ofqual and is on its 4th submission. This hasn’t been submitted yet, and it’s likely Christmas will delay things, so I suspect it will be mid January before we hear anything (and that assumes Ofqual don’t take the 40 days they are allocated to review things). Eduqas is on its third submission which was submitted on 14th December so again it’s likely to be mid January before we hear anything. Both OCR and Edexcel have been accredited for some time now at GCSE but if you are keen to wait for AQA and Eduqas in order to make a fully informed decision use the DfE Subject Content document that was released in 2015 for any planning or for option evening. This is what all boards are using as the basis for their specifications and this won’t change.  Keep your eye on the DfE website for updates on both the GCSE and A level.

Ofsted & Marking

Ofsted have been releasing quite a bit of information recently on things that schools are doing where they are using Ofsted as justification, despite the fact that Offed themselves don’t require these things to be in place. The latest release surrounds marking, in particular it says that there is little research that suggests that detailed marking has a significant impact on pupils’ learning and that until such evidence is available this area should not be reported on or judged by Ofsted. All that should be focused on is whether marking follows the school’s assessment policy (and it might be useful to encourage your school to review this policy based on some of Ofsted comments). Mannequin Challenge

Dominic Aston and the D&T team at Audenshaw School have created a great mannequin challenge as a way of creating interest in their new Twitter feed (Audenshaw_dt). What a fab way of showcasing a department!

Prize Announced for the 'Product In A Tin’ Competition

H100Q

This year's Product in a Tin competition launched some time ago but I hadn't had official confirmation about the prize at that point. I can now confirm that the main prize will be a H Class 100 Husqvarna Viking Sewing Machine that retails at over £300. This prize goes to the school the winning student attends with the student receiving a smaller separate prize. A HUGE thank you to Coles Sewing Centre and Husqvarna Viking who have sponsored the main prize for the last 3 years.
