Free resource on careers in fashion & textiles, open evening ideas & resources, useful quick links & lots of freebies

Careers resource

This week I have released my latest free†resource offer which is a PDF resource on careers in the fashion and textiles industry. I had hoped to release this a few†weeks ago but it†took a little while longer to get organised†than I had anticipated. It is more of an information resource than one for display although there are quite a few sections that are ideal for†printing off for open evenings and options.†Although it is targeted at Post 16 students the resource also includes activities for younger students which might be particularly suitable for†homework. Anyone attending The Textiles Teacher Roadshow†(Nottingham on 8th October or London on 3rd December) or the GCSE D&T 2017: Textiles in the New†Qualification course (Liverpool 11th November or London 14th December) will also receive a Word copy of the document (making it easier to edit) as well as jpeg†copies of all of the images (over 60 images).

Calendar† ††Things coming up soon include:

2nd Oct -†Online support†7-8pm:†resources & equipment for food†

4th Oct - The Graphics of Punk exhibition opens at the†Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising (until 29 January 2017)

8th Oct -†The Textiles Teacher Roadshow, Nottingham ONLY A WEEK LEFT TO BOOK YOUR PLACE & ONLY 6 TICKETS LEFT

9th Oct - Deadline to download my†Facebook Freebie on careers in textiles & fashion

13th Oct - New exhibition at the Barbican opens called The Vulgar: Fashion Redefined (on until 5th Feb 2017)

Includes a short video.

Useful for thinking about user needs and designing for real problems.

A storage system for keeping personal belongings safe while you are on the beach.

Rumpl wrap

Good inspiration for an A level design brief focused on products that transform into†something else.

Also useful as a starting point for a starter or short design activity.

An outdoor coat that transforms into a blanket designed by a company who want to transform our thinking about interior design by using outdoor performance fabrics in place of traditional ones.

Open Evenings

It’s open†evenings for many schools this term. If you are†looking for ideas for ways of showcasing work take a look at some of these ideas from a range of schools, all of†which are featured on the†‘Featured Schools’ page of my†website.†

They include a†pop up shop idea from Tracey Heaton at Flixton Girls’ School in Trafford, a selfie poster from Jonny Meeson & Caroline†Gallagher from†Wymondham College in Norfolk, a door frame sized weaving loom from†Tamsin Mitchell from Lady Margaret School in London and You Tube videos from Sandback School in Cheshire and The Cedars Upper School in Bedfordshire.

open evening

If you are looking for an activity idea how about using some inspiration from my local shopping centre who ran a community project with children decorating leaves which were made into a dress by a local corset maker. The leaves are made out of paper but could easily be made out of fabric, or any other material if you want to focus on the broader materials approach for the new GCSE D&T. Find out more about this project.

If you are looking some quick displays with impact the Tomorrow’s Engineers website has a great†free poster download on 10 reasons to become a scientist or engineer. The poster includes a specific reference to the value of D&T and it's good to see this also includes textiles. Download the poster here.†

Sainsbury’s are also currently selling a†Dorling Kindersley book called How Super Cool Stuff Works for £9 and this might be suitable for making into posters. Like most DK books it is very visual with loads of†annotated images and glossy, bright coloured pages that will instantly cheer up a gloomy corridor. See more†images from this book.

Careers in Fashion & Textiles

If you are looking for textiles resources for open†evening download my current free resource on careers in fashion and†textiles. Although the resource is designed as an†information resource rather than for display there are†quite a few†sections that you might be able to use as handouts or to create your own displays from.
