Wood Tailoring

Includes a video of the wood tailoring process & similar activities students can experiment with

The work Färg and Blanche, a Swedish and French design duo, combines materials and techniques in an interesting way. Their ‘Wood Tailoring’ range consists of plywood stitched together using heavy duty sewing machines. Fredrik Färg says "Sewing is so heavily associated with the fashion industry but we like to think we're tailoring each of these pieces to create Haute Couture furniture,”.

Design careers

Great for the ‘past & present professionals’ section of the new GCSE D&T as well as the careers section of the Tech Awards

AllCreative is a website that aims to showcase a range of careers in the creative industries and their importance to the UK economy. It includes a wide range of professionals within the design industry from fashion, architecture to graphic design. (via Louise Burnett on the Design and Technology Teachers Forum)

Literacy & Numeracy

Literacy and numeracy have a high profile in all subject areas and this is further emphasised by the maths content in the new GCSE D&T. There are a wide range of strategies commonly used in schools such as learning mats, keyword walls, and model answers and the links below include a range of websites that offer support.

DfE document on literacy and numeracy

National Numeracy website supporting mathematical thinking in everyday life

The National Numeracy Challenge - an interactive website that helps young people and adults improve their maths skills

The Literacy Trust website supporting the development of literacy skills

Take a look at the literacy and numeracy resources on www.jambledandt.com, including free downloads for literacy and numeracy mats.

literacy numeracy pencils

These pencils are a fun, low key way of raising the profiles of literacy and numeracy. The Stabilo timetables pencils are from Wilko and are 4 for £1.50. The word count pencil shows how many words you have written as it wears down and was created Mark Champions who is the artist in residence for the London Science Museum (and the pencils can be purchased in their shop)
