A new year with lots of exciting things planned!

Julie - Leics-1. Mercury

Things were busy over Christmas with the house move and getting orders out that I forgot to mention that I was one a of a number of textiles artists featured in the Leicester Mercury as part of their guide to last minute gifts for Christmas! They featured the Denim Jack wall art which is a large scale canvas of the Union Jack made out of appliqued denim.

I was really pleased to get a call out of the blue from the Mercury asking if I would like to be included. A bit of free publicity is always good so I jumped at the chance. It is always hard to know how much of a difference this sort of thing makes as you never really know if sales or visits to your website increased as a result.  It is certainly nice to see yourself in print though especially when the quality of the other work was so good.

The paper got my details from the Made in Leicestershire website where my work is featured www.madeinleicestershire.org.uk/. This site is for local artists but if you are looking to promote your small business it is certainly worth looking for something similar in your area. They feature your work for free (you do have to formally apply and be accepted) and they do a range of free newsletters which you can advertise in. This type of local support is absolutely invaluable for small businesses and has certainly led to people contacting me about work opportunities.

I also found out this week that I will be attending the Fashion, Embroidery and Stitch Show at the NEC from 21st - 24th March. This is an exciting opportunity that has been arranged for me by Coles Sewing Centre, for whom I do a lot of courses, particularly ones for textiles teachers. I will be on a demonstration stand showing lots of samples and techniques related to the high tech textiles series I am currently doing for Sewing World magazine.

I have never done anything quite so big before so this is going to be an interesting couple of days especially as the show is very big. This show is one of 3 with entry to Sewing for Pleasure and Hobbycrafts being included in the ticket price. Coles Sewing Centre will also be there on a separate stand so you can see the type of machinery I use in a lot of my work.

2012 had a good end for me with my house move and the article in the Mercury and 2013 is looking exciting too with the Sewing World articles, the NEC show and a whole host of other courses and events I am doing over the year. Take a look at my events workshops page to see some of the other things that are happening in 2013. My only challenge now is keeping up with the workload for it all!
